JANUARY 25, 2025 -- Finally, there is some relief from the Arctic air on the way. January is running 7.5-degree BELOW AVERAGE thanks to seven mornings in the single digits and 11 full days below freezing.

For the last week of January, temperatures will start off very mild. The cold air gets pushed into Canada as the Jetstream retreats back north. Warmer air will begin to really be felt in the region by Tuesday and Wednesday. Now, we're talking temperatures in the lower 50s as a possibility, but that will feel very nice compared to the weather we've dealt with for the majority of the month.

A weak cold front will drop south on Wednesday afternoon, sending another shot of slightly cooler air into the region. It's not Arctic air, but it will send afternoon highs back to the 40s for a few days. No rain or snow is expected with the midweek cold front.

The upcoming week will be fairly quiet, but a large storm system is set to eject out of the Desert Southwest on Saturday, February 1. The track of this system favors rain in our region. In addition, we should be far enough north to avoid severe storms as well. At this point, it looks like this will be a solid 0.5 to 0.75" rain event in Southern Illinois.

As this system exits, the Jetstream will become very amplified, setting up a rather active pattern through the first six days of February. The Jetstream running right overhead will result in Southern Illinois within the "battle zone" between the warm and cold air. Several storm systems are possible in the timeframe.

There are signs of another blast of colder air arriving after February 7, but that's two weeks away, so we'll discuss that more in next week's blog.

Thanks for your insight. Like the way you don’t over predict. Just what is for sure to be expected. Thanks again
